6 Easy Sustainable Swaps

6 Easy Sustainable Swaps

  • September 21, 2021

We all know about reusable bottles and shopping bags, non-plastic straws alternatives, carpooling, composting and recycling—but what other easy sustainable swaps could we try?

Local & Seasonal

The journeys our goods go one are a great pollutant. Imagine: you go to the grocery store and buy canned pears—they were grown in Argentina, packed in Thailand and are now being consumed in Canada. A wonderful way to help the environment, ourselves, and our community is to shop locally. Plenty of things are grown here by amazing people. Shop seasonally when you can and try to stick close to home, as much as is possible for you.

New Habits

The first step to sustainability isn’t to change everything. We are not aiming for perfection. Small, but meaningful changes, in the long run, make all the difference.

Did you know that almost 5 million plastic toothbrushes end up in landfills or our oceans every year? Make the swap to bamboo toothbrushes. When they no longer serve you, simply snip off the bristles and compost the handle! Don’t go throwing away the plastic toothbrushes in your cupboard just yet. If you have them, use them! And once they stop brushing your teeth all that well, toss them in your cleaning cupboard. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

Another easy sustainable swap? Paper towels and napkins. Sure, having a disposable option on hand is practical for some extreme messes. However, in most cases, a piece of cloth does the job just fine. Instead of throwing it in the bin after a single use, you can just throw your towel in your hamper and add it to your next laundry load.

Speaking of laundry, this eco-friendly detergent option is manufactured in Canada!

And while we’re at it: biodegradable hair tieswooden hangersre-fillable cleaning products and actual cotton cotton rounds are all alternatives to consider.

Meatless Mondays

Reducing our meat intake is sustainable. Love a good steak? No worries. Incorporating vegetarian or vegan meals into your weekly menu reduces your carbon footprint greatly—making small changes that fit within your preference and your means is all that’s needed. Vegetarian doesn’t mean boring! See it as a way to try something new and delicious.

Garden For the Bees

This might only be an option for those who have a large balcony or a garden. Still, if you have the room and a bit of a green thumb, why not swap your normal plants for pollinator-friendly alternatives? Check out some of the plants we have at the spa here.

Gift Experiences

Finding the perfect gift can be quite a challenge. Most homes are already cluttered with plenty of stuff. Memories make for the ideal present. Gift experiences!

Use What You Have

As tempting as it may be, don’t throw out all the not-so-sustainable things in your home! Use them up to their fullest potential—and then reuse them, recycle or compost, if possible. Sustainability is all about making small changes that will, eventually, have a big impact.

Whilst individual change is important for sustainability, we understand that companies also need to do their part. It’s why Nordik Spa-Nature always innovates and strives to discover new ways to be sustainable. From caring for our own bees, supporting locals and even planting our own garden to bring freshness to your table—being one with nature is part of who we are.
